2025 Christmas Update

Merry Christmas Friends and Family!

Hope you are doing well and enjoying this wonderful Christmas season!

We have had an eventful year over here in the Fox household. Here is a short update from this past year.

In December of last year, our church elders joined our Wednesday night home group and prayed for each of the households in our group. These times of prayer for each of the the families in our church has been very meaningful to use each year, and something that we both appreciate and anticipate. At one point during the prayer time last December, one of the elders said something along the lines of feeling that God would greatly expand our family’s ministry outreach this year. We didn’t know what that might mean at the time, but boy, did that turn out to be true!

The leadership at Antioch has been praying for a couple years that God would bring along the next pastor to eventually take Mark’s place in the coming years. Micah and I have felt quite content where God has had us over the years, and when asked each year at our annual elders retreat if we feel led to pursue the pastorate, for the last several years we have shared that we really haven't felt like the Lord has been leading us in that direction.

So imagine our surprise when, in February of this year, this began to change in our hearts and minds when, at an elder/deacon planning meeting, the elders presented the growing urgency about needing to find a replacement pastor to the deacons, and inviting them to join in praying more intentionally on the matter. On the way home from that meeting, Micah and I realized that we both felt impressed during that meeting that we needed to more seriously take the matter to the Lord in prayer and truly seek His will for us in this matter. So, with a little fear and trepidation, we decided to take time to pray, both separately and together, that God would tell us if this is something He wants us to pursue.

In March, the elders called for a church-wide meeting, and during this meeting, asked the congregation to seriously join the elders in prayer about who the next pastor of Antioch should be, as well as to ask the Lord for wisdom to know what to do about our growing need for more space at the church, as the congregation continues to grow and new families join. Little did they know at that time that God had already started changing our minds and hearts on the pastor decision, though we weren’t quite ready to tell anyone about it. After taking one last weekend to pray over it at the beginning of May, God brought us both to a place of peace and assurance that the pastorate at Antioch was indeed what God wanted us to pursue. Talk about a 180 for us!

This was nowhere on our radar when Micah and I did our annual planning for our family in January, which just reiterated to us that…“Man plans his ways, but God directs his paths.” Starting this January (2026), Micah will begin working part time for Antioch as an Associate Pastor, as well as begin seminary courses in February for a Master’s of Arts in Biblical Counseling. He will remain in a part time role at Tassel, where he has been for over 16 years now, and it's possible that sometime in 2026, he will transition to a full-time role at Antioch, with the plan to move into the Lead Pastor position sometime in 2028.

Fast-forward to the present and Micah and I can say with confidence that not only do we continue to feel the Lord’s distinct calling, but we also have a growing excitement about serving Him in this way. We are thankful to also have the excitement of the elders and congregation, and we are so grateful for their outpouring of love, support and encouragement to our family.

Updates on the kiddos…

Blake is a junior in high school and finishing his first semester in “real school” at Alamance Country Community College. His plan is to get his Associates in Science, and then, Lord willing, transfer to Liberty University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. He is the brainiac in the family and loves learning and discovering new things. He hopes eventually to go into the field of chemical or biochemical research down the road. He got his “wings” this year and received his driver’s license and phone. Big time! We got to attend the "College for a Weekend" event at Liberty in September, which was so fun! In his free time, Blake enjoys playing the guitar on his own and on the worship team at church. He is working part-time for a brick-mason in the church, which is provided great training and experience, as well as great exercise! We are so proud of the young man God has made him to be.

Seth is a sophomore this year and enjoying his learner’s permit, getting plenty of practice driving our neighbor around on various errands during the week. He still amazes us with his skill on the piano, and it’s always a privilege to be serenaded each day with his practicing while doing school with the others. He is praying and seeking the Lord’s direction for his future and dreams of one day getting to produce movie soundtracks. We shall see! We have no doubt that God will use him to bless others through music in some way or another. Seth had the opportunity to spend ten days on the Shoemaker family ranch in Tulare, California helping his great-grandfather, Virgil. Here's a picture of him and three generations of Shoemakers. From left to right: Seth, Scott Shoemaker, Woody Shoemaker and Virgil Shoemaker (97 years old!).

Owen is twelve now and in seventh grade this year. He was able to go on his first mission’s trip through Mission Serve with Micah and the older boys in June. They traveled to Buckhorn, Kentucky volunteering for a week doing construction and repair projects at a home for autistic boys. He is a “Trailman” in a local troop of Trail Life, which is somewhat like a Christ-centered version of Boy Scouts. He enjoys getting to go on special outings with Trail Life and Micah such as hiking and camping, which has also been a sweet opportunity for them to bond together even more. Owen has many varying and fast-changing interests and has a great sense of quick-witted humor.

Liza is ten and in fifth grade. She is blossoming into a lovely young lady these days. Her relationships with friends have grown a lot this year and she loves to do sleepovers and have friends over as often as possible. She got to try her hand (or foot?) at soccer this spring and we saw a quite competitive side of her shine on the field (it comes from all the skills she’s gained defending herself against four brothers 😉). She is in love with babies and horses and dreams of one day owning her own ranch filled with ponies and horses to ride and care for. She is an avid reader and we can hardly keep her supplied with enough Nancy Drew, Mandie, The Vanderbeekers, Little House, and many other series to satisfy her.

Ian, the happy “baby of the family”, turned seven this year! He is extremely proud of the fact that he is measuring a full inch taller than his siblings did at his age. He's on track to be the tallest Fox kid of them all! Micah and I chuckle to ourselves when we think about how our parenting philosophy has evolved over the years. If you ask our other kids, he gets away with murder, but Micah and I like to think of it as our parenting “growing in grace.” He is a delight most of the time, and still cute enough to be quickly forgiven the few times he isn’t quite as delightful. Ian still has his "nut collection," which continues to grow throughout the year. He has been enjoying our weekly homeschool co-op that he and Liza attend. He likes to create order and has a natural tendency to think ahead for outings and prepare accordingly. It will be interesting to see how God will use that bent in the future.

I (Kari) divvy up my time between homeschooling, teaching at co-op, helping with women’s ministry at church, gardening and keeping up with homework from Bible studies at church. We completed the first of several 8-week courses in the "Deep Discipleship" program, produced by the trio that also supply the Knowing Faith podcast, and it has been wonderful to learn new things about God’s Word, doctrine and theology. I have the privilege of keeping my niece and nephew on Fridays while my sister works, which is a highlight of my week. I have been running more, and while I don’t always enjoy it, I’m immensely grateful to be physically able to do so. Some days I feel quite trad-wifey as I’m baking gluten-free bread and using vegetables from the garden in our meal planning. I still have a love for dahlias, and I continue to increase the number of varieties in our garden a little each year.

Micah has been a busy guy this year as you can imagine! He does an excellent job juggling all his spheres of influence as a husband, father, son, elder, co-worker, repairman (at home) and chief yard manager (at home). His responsibilities at church have been slowly increasing over this past year while his workload at Tassel has remained the same; so he is hoppin’ most of the time. He will be so sad to not be as involved at Tassel next year after a whopping 16+ years together! They have been a fabulous company to be a part of and it’s going to be hard to say goodbye to that chapter of our lives at some point in the future. Micah continues running as well, and he still loves to sing and did an Easter special with Seth on piano and Blake on guitar. He is looking forward to moving into a pastor role at the church next year, and he's excited to start (and finish) his seminary courses.

Thanks for hanging in there to the end of this lengthy update. We are so excited about all that God has for our family in 2026. We are so humbled and in awe of the many ways the Lord has blessed us above and beyond what we deserve. The song, Holy Forever, has become a household favorite, and we have loved listening to the beautiful and powerful words over and over as it has also been a favorite at the church in the past year as well.

May God bless you this Christmas with the knowledge of His great love for you. If you don’t know Him personally, we invite you to reach out to us or someone you know to start a conversation about how you can know Him better.

Merry Christmas!

Micah, Kari, Blake, Seth, Owen, Liza and Ian

2024 in Review

Dear Friends and Family,

Merry Christmas from our bustling household! As the year comes to a close, we are taking a moment to reflect on the many blessings and memorable moments that have filled our days. Here’s a peek into what 2024 has been like for the Fox crew.

Blake hit a major milestone this year: he earned his driving permit! If you’ve seen us clutching the car door a little tighter, now you know why. We are so proud of his growing independence and can’t wait to see him flourish as a confident driver (while praying for everyone’s nerves in the meantime!). We are also actively exploring post-high school education options for him in the field of chemistry, as he’s shown a strong academic ability and interest in this area. Blake also got his braces off this year, revealing a fantastic new smile! He has been working one day a week for Feed the Hunger which has been a great experience for him.

Seth continues to dazzle us with his musical talent. His advanced piano studies have reached new heights, and we’re often treated to impromptu concerts in the living room. Whether he’s practicing a classical masterpiece or tinkering with composing his own pieces, Seth’s dedication and artistry inspire us all. Seth also got his braces off this year, adding a perfect smile to his many talents. If you would like to listen to a sample of Seth's piano playing, follow this link

Owen keeps us on our toes with his enthusiastic drive for the latest ever-changing interest. One week he’s exploring woodworking, the next he’s tinkering with a dissected drone or testing out a new sport. This year, he even tried his hand at baseball, adding yet another adventure to his growing list of hobbies. His curiosity and enthusiasm for trying new things make life exciting for all of us.

Liza remains our passionate and girly star. Whether she’s crafting, dressing up, or dreaming big, she brings boundless energy and creativity to our home. Her vibrant spirit reminds us to celebrate the beauty in every moment. This year, Liza decided to take a break from ballet to explore new interests and is looking forward to trying soccer this spring!

Ian, our resident comedian, keeps us laughing daily. His quick wit and knack for finding humor in the smallest situations brighten even the busiest days. Along with wanting his two from teeth for Christmas, he has been fascinated by seeds and nuts adding to his eclectic collection over the past year. We’ll admit he’s a bit spoiled—but with his charm, who can blame him? Ian also started first grade this year, and we are so proud of how much he’s grown and learned!

Micah celebrated two incredible milestones this year: 15 years at his position at North Star Marketing and the big 4-0 birthday! His hard work and dedication continue to provide for our family, and we’re so grateful for his steady leadership and faithfulness in his career. His responsibilities also include serving as an elder at church, a role he fulfills with great humility and devotion. This year, Micah also accomplished a personal goal by running a half-marathon, showing his determination and commitment to staying active.

Kari has had a fulfilling year as she continues to homeschool the kids and serve in women’s ministry at church. A highlight of her year was reconnecting with her childhood horse over the summer—a sweet reminder of God’s faithfulness and the joy of simple blessings. (Micah is being nominated as "Husband Of The Year" for agreeing to let her keep a full-sized horse in their backyard for three months!) She has also loved having her sister living less than a mile away, which has brought extra joy and connection to her days. Additionally, Kari has found peace and fulfillment in gardening, nurturing both her plants and her spirit.

We feel so blessed by God’s grace and provision throughout this year. Christmas is a time to celebrate the gospel message of Jesus Christ—the greatest gift of all. Through His birth, life, death, and resurrection, we are offered forgiveness for our sins, salvation and hope that transcends every circumstance. May this season remind us all of God’s boundless love and His promise of eternal life through faith in His Son. Thank you for being part of our journey. Your prayers, friendship, and love mean so much to us.

Wishing you a Christmas filled with peace, love, and laughter, and a New Year full of promise.

With love,

The Fox Family

P.S. If you are struggling with your relationship with God, we would be happy to talk with you about it. We don't have all the answers, but we know where to go to get them. Drop us a line at kariandmicah@gmail.com to connect.

2020 Christmas Update

 Merry Christmas!

A few times this year we have chuckled to ourselves when we think about how excited we were that 2019 was over (see last year’s blog post) and 2020 was going to be a fresh, new start. Oh boy, 2020 has been one for the record books, hasn’t it?

This year we converted our garage into a bonus room, added a dog to the family (Sadie), stayed home more (if that’s even possible as a homeschooling family), and experienced a record number of ER visits as you will see below.

Before...

After!

Sadie! Another great find from Craigslist. ;)

The summer of injuries...

After a freak accident with the piano bench falling over, two of Liza's toes were badly injured. She was so brave during her trip to the ER. "Fluffy Puff" never left her side.
Extra snuggles from Ian when she got home.

First day of summer "break"!

Not pictured: Blake's incision from a half-inch splinter which required a doctor's extraction. What was up with the injuries to extremities this year?! Very thankful that none of them were super serious.

------

At times this year, it has felt like life came to a halt or that so much of the year was canceled, but come to find out life moves on...even in a pandemic! Here are brief updates about each member of the Fox clan:

Micah

Micah hit 11 years at North Star Marketing! In the midst of navigating business in a pandemic, the company decided to reposition itself and focus exclusively on marketing for educational institutions (K-12 private schools, higher ed, etc.). He is balancing his time between full-time husband, dad, employee, and elder at Antioch church. In-between house projects on the weekend (Yes, dear! ;-), Micah has enjoyed taking Kari on dates (different in 2020), playing football with the boys in the backyard, and reading books to Liza and Ian while they can still sit on his lap and enjoy the daddy snuggle time :)

Kari

Kari is still figuring how to thrive as a full-time homeschool mom and every once in a while she actually gets out of bed ;-). She still enjoys the creative outlet of doing graphic design and marketing a few hours per week for Alamance Fine Arts Academy. We are so thankful to report that her health has continued to improve over this year. Homeschooling takes a huge percentage of her time and energy, but she is learning to let go of perfectionism and enjoy this time while the kids are young and at home.

(A huge milestone...Parted ways with our diaper pail after 11 years of faithful service)  :P

Blake and Seth in "Cry Wolf". Seth played one of the Three Little Pigs and Blake played Peter.

Blake

We have been so grateful to the Lord for the spiritual growth we’ve seen in Blake this year. He seems to be 11 going on 21 at times. He is now less than a year from the long-sought-after milestone of getting to attend our church’s annual Men’s Retreat (12-yrs old and above). He and Seth are taking acting classes this fall and thoroughly enjoying making us laugh with their dramatics. Blake got to play Peter in Cry Wolf this fall and plays the young George Bailey in the It’s a Wonderful Life play in a few weeks. If you’re in the area and looking for something to do, you can reserve tickets here. :)

Seth

Seth continues to improve in his piano skills and enjoys sitting down to play just for the fun of it. It helps that we have both the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars music books to play from. ;) You can hear some of his piano playing here and here. He is our quiet thinker and is quick with witty and hilarious replies. He is also our resident dog-trainer and baby whisperer with Ian. You’ll often find him spending his spare time outside playing with Sadie, or Ian, or both!

Owen

It turns out 2020 was not the best year to begin a new sport. Even though the season was canceled, Owen did manage to play a little bit of soccer for the first time in a fall soccer camp put on by the city. This year we have seen that he has a knack for academics and is also our most affectionate child. Though he often leads the way among the Fox children in, hmmm...creating opportunities for “discipleship”, he has a tender heart as evidenced by the many love notes from him hanging on our bedroom walls.

Liza

Liza is still quite dramatic, but we are happy (and extremely relieved) to report that she has had more smiles that tantrum outbursts this year than last. She takes the prize for the best nostril-flaring belly laugh and is both a big sister and little-mama to Ian. It’s both cute and entertaining
to listen to Liza and Ian chatter from their beds early in the morning and at night before they fall asleep. Liza is thrilled with recently gaining the new skill of learning to read the much anticipated Bob Books.

Superman, Spaceman and killer of bad guys.

Ian

Ian turned two in October and the very next day took on the serious task of beginning the expected duties of an average two-year-old. He has the cutest little “humpf!” he does with his arms crossed. He can talk up a storm and is currently infatuated with Superman, bad guys, and “rawr rawrs” (which is anything scary). His favorite time of the day is the brief period between taking off his clothes and putting pj’s on when he can make a few laps around the house as “Nakey Boy”. What is it with little boys and being naked?? Everyone in the family loves him so much and is always willing to help do things for him. You know, the last child...usually a little spoiled.

Well, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Here’s to looking forward to 2021 and looking toward Jesus- the author and finisher of our faith.

July 2nd - Dec. 2nd, 2019

Merry Christmas 2019!

Christmas is a beautiful time to reflect on the past year and what God has done in our lives. It’s also that time of year when we get to post better-than-normal pictures of the family with the kids smiling all at the same time. We know some of you will not read the post but just skim through to look at the pictures..so we’ll try to keep the details brief and in a spirit of humility, we’ve chosen to display only the very BEST photos of us this year (I know...photoshop can only help some of us but so much). ;)

I guess you could say this year started with a bit of a scare...and with the only time in our married life when we spent seven straight nights away from the kids. Kari’s health had been declining due to acute pancolitis, and on January 14th we went for a visit to her doctor at Duke. The doctor sent us to the emergency room where we spent the next 7 hours in the waiting room, and from there, we were admitted to the hospital for the next seven days. The less-than-romantic getaway on the 4th floor at Duke hospital was not exactly how we would have liked to start the year, but we know it’s what the Lord had in store for us (You can read more about that experience in our last blog post if you’d like).

Here are a few quick lessons we’re still in the process of learning from this year:
  1. In our weakness, God is strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” God has been teaching us a lot about His grace this year. We know there is no grace in our imagination, so we’ve had to work very hard to focus on what is true, and not on what might happen or even dwell too long on what is happening that we’re fearful of.
  2. In addition to the physical weakness, we’ve also been reminded in very real ways that our battles in this world are not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). The battle against fear and anxiety has been very real for us this year. Micah has been studying Philippians for most of the year and 4:6-7 has been a go-to prayer over Kari and our whole family many, many times. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  3. Next, we were reminded of just how amazing God’s church is when it’s operating as the body of Christ should. We were on the receiving end of SO MANY acts of love and compassion this year as our family struggled with ongoing health trials. Words don’t do it justice. Thank you, Antioch Community Church, as well as our friends and family. We love you all.
  4. Lastly, we were reminded of the significance and sanctity of our wedding vows. We stood at the altar on May 3rd, 2008 and vowed to have and to hold, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health. In Ravi Zacharias’ book, “I, Isaac, Take Thee Rebekah,” he addressed this daily decision beautifully, “...recognize that dying to yourself is an act of the will. You must choose to lay down your life in the best sense of the term. You surrender your will to the will of God by an act of commitment and in the power of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God. That is the indispensable beginning. No one likes to begin life with a funeral. But in a sense, that is where marriage begins. You choose to die to yourself and to bring to life a new affection.”

We’re genuinely grateful for the way that the Lord makes all things new and redeems even the toughest of years to bring Himself glory and to encourage and strengthen us.

Before getting to a few individual updates, here are a few quick event highlights from our year:

Trip to The Ark Encounter in Kentucky in March

We stayed in an Airbnb with family from both sides and enjoyed a visit to the Ark together. It was a pretty incredible sight that we’d highly recommend!

Micah & Kari’s 11th anniversary

We managed an overnight getaway to Chapel Hill and thanked the Lord for yet another year of married bliss! ;)
Jonathan (Kari’s sister) got hitched to his sweetheart Kimberly in May, and our whole family traveled up to Maryland to celebrate with them.

Trip to Holden Beach

Every year when we ask the kids what the highlight of their year was it’s almost always unanimous...our week-long trip to the beach with family!

Trip to Carowinds in August

Micah, Kari, Blake, Seth, and Owen spent the day at Carowinds (amusement park) in August, and the boys got their fill of rides and coasters. It was a blast! Blake and Seth worked hard over the summer to raise money to go and to build up their savings accounts a bit more as well.

Seth and Blake were baptized in August

After the boys came to the Lord and were saved in 2018, they decided they were both ready to be baptized in August of this year. It was such a special event, and as parents, it’s a delight to see the Lord work in your children’s hearts to draw them to Himself. It’s a work of the Lord and not of ourselves!

Here are a few individual updates to wrap it up with a bow!

Last year’s little surprise baby, Ian, has been SUCH an incredible blessing to all of us this year. With some pretty intense ups and downs, his easy-going nature has brought so much joy and laughter to us and helped eased tension many times. He turned one this fall and has such an agreeable personality that he been our first baby to not have the word “No!” in their first three words ever spoken. He has only recently started to learn how to throw little tantrums, and we can tell we are definitely becoming more lax in our parenting as we just sit back and laugh. The last baby is always the most spoiled. :)

Liza turned four in May and has been our resident nanny as she has shared a room with Ian this year. She is becoming more “girly” even among four rambunctious brothers (although we are still working on not pretending to burp as loud as possible at the table, just to earn a few snickers from the boys). She is passionate about, well, everything and is especially into coloring right now. We are noticing that the frequency of tantrums as decreased this year (praise GOD!) just before Kari lost every bit of sanity, and they have been replaced by an increased number of tea parties instead.

Owen turned six this year, and through many tears and toil (tears on his part, toil on mom’s part), he finished his reading lesson book this summer just before our beach trip. Owen continues to be our all-around sports champion and can whirl a back-handed frisbee with more accuracy than either of his older brothers (don’t tell them that). He still has a tough job being the third boy, but it just means he gets extra helpings of love and attention from mom and dad.

Seth’s been taking leaps and bounds in his advancement in piano playing this year. We have all benefited from his love of piano as we listen to him practice or just play for fun. He turned nine this summer, and he loves to spend his free time outside. Micah helped the boys build a workbench this summer, and Seth has been creatively constructing various items such as a three-legged stool and wooden boxes.

Blake turned double digits this summer! (Does that mean we are officially grown-ups now?) He has stepped up this year in his role as the firstborn and almost always has a good attitude. Blake still shows a knack for academics and is excelling in math and language arts. He likes to think deeply and asks great questions during our devotion times. Acting is one of his passions, and he is super enthused about writing and directing a short Christmas skit for church this year.

For Kari, this year has held some intense times of both trial and growth. At times it has felt like her health has dominated much of our spare time and emotions this year, but we are so very thankful that the past three months have been more stable for her. She has relished having her sister, Joy, live in the same town and gets to indulge in girls’ nights out more frequently. Homeschooling takes up most of her time and energy on an average day. Kari and the kids both have enjoyed taking one school day per week for a field trip instead of bookwork, and that has helped everyone not get bogged down. It’s a full season of motherhood with both babies and biology lessons in the house, but it’s just that, a season. She is so glad to feel well enough lately to start getting back into a few activities outside the home. She is still not where she’d like to be health-wise but is learning to trust God for the future and to find joy in each day.

Micah celebrated his 10-year workiversary this summer at North Star and continues to be a valuable member of the team there. He had the pleasure of visiting an axe throwing venue for the first time for his brother’s birthday, and we’re pretty sure his beard grew about three additional inches. Micah has gotten into a solid running routine this year and ran a 10K in September with a personal best time. He hopes to run a 10-mile race in April! Micah continues to be an awesome servant-leader in our home and frequently amazes me with his selfless attitude. (Kari here) :)

If you are still reading here, thank you for enduring to the end. We love you all, and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Much love,

The Foxes
